High Blood Pressure and Stroke

Having high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a serious problem for your health. Many of us are not aware of the proper ways of taking care of our bodies until illness attacks and we are then forced to deal with a medical problem. It is essential to monitor the food you are eating and the habits you are practicing and come to understand what these things do to your body and your blood pressure.

 

Each year there are 700,000 Americans who have strokes and 150,000 die from having this cardiovascular illness. Stroke is also the third leading cause of serious and long term disability nowadays and many people do not know that they are at risk of this illness. That is why it is important to know if you have high blood pressure, because hypertension can be an indicator of having a stroke.

Elderly individuals are usually more prone to having strokes, but this is not always the case. There are some people below the age of 65 who have experienced strokes and this is because many of them had risk factors that were taken for granted that led to having high blood pressure. Many of them were not aware that although they are young, stroke can also attack them. That is why there are numerous unnecessary deaths due to high blood pressure.

There are several things that you need to know which can be applicable to your own life to protect you from having high blood pressure and eventually stroke.

It is important to know the risk factors of the illness, whether they are uncontrollable like age and genes or controllable risk factors like smoking, excessive weight and high blood pressure.

And since high blood is a controllable risk factor it can be reduced through eliminating risk factors like a poor diet, bad eating habits and smoking.

Be aware of the warning signs of stoke to be able to determine if you are at risk or if you could be having a stroke.

It is essential to know basic first aid and to get immediate medical help if you suspect you are having a stroke.

Check your blood pressure as often as possible. It is better to take some precautionary measures before anything serious happens. Having high blood pressure may not seem to be a big problem, but if not treated properly, it could be the difference between life and death.

There are numerous ways of preventing your self from having stroke even if you have high blood pressure. It can be from the simplest way like monitoring your diet to changing your entire lifestyle. Adopting good health habits to keep your blood pressure lowered will also provide with many health benefits to help protect you from other diseases as well. If you have high blood pressure, it is important to follow the advice of your doctor. You may need to take prescription medication to prevent a stroke from occurring.
